The most serious environmental threat along the Connecticut shoreline is the danger of the eutrophication of Long Island Sound. Eutrophication occurs when rainwater contaminated with nitrogen-rich fertilizer drains into the Sound, stimulating algae growth. Excess algae depletes the water of dissolved oxygen, which can consequently kill fish and other marine life.
